Contemporary interior design refers to whatever design trends are popular now. Modern is an actual style characterized by clean, spare, angular and gently curved lines, molded wood and plastic furniture and geometric fabric patterns. The terms are used interchangeably by many--and even though the term "contemporary" refers to the style based on mid-term modern, their meanings are different.

Contemporary design is sleek and uncluttered, and relies on its clean lines and quality materials for its distinctive character, not on carving or ornate embellishment. Sectionals and modular elements are frequently used.

Contemporary design will continue to evolve as the decades pass, and will change to reflect changes in society and culture.

Small Bedroom Design

Your bedroom should be a calming space that encourages relaxation and romance. It's a challenge, however, to create a calm, romantic mood in a small bedroom. Too many accessories, large furniture and even the wrong paint color can all work together to make your bedroom a place you'd rather avoid. Luckily, the right paint color and furniture arrangement can work wonders in making a small bedroom feel large, bright and comfortable enough to do more than just sleep in.

Emphasize the height of the room. Choose tall, narrow furniture with simple, clean lines. Consider purchasing a queen-sized bed rather than a king. Opt for a tall dresser rather than a short, wide one. Hang a molding at the ceiling to draw attention upwards, and hang curtains that stretch from the ceiling to the floor.

Choose paint colors that make a small room feel larger. Cool tones such as grays and greens make smaller spaces feel more open. Painting the ceiling one shade lighter than the walls will further open up the room. Another option is to choose one wall and paint vertical stripes on it, using the ceiling shade of paint as the contrasting line shade. Vertical stripes will make the room seem taller and larger.

Decorate with light-colored linens. Bright or bold patterns on the bed will overwhelm a small bedroom. Instead, choose soft, light colors and stick with subdued patterns or none at all. Stick to clean, simple lines in your linens and accessories.

Use lighting properly. Too many ornate lamps will overwhelm a small bedroom. Instead, choose two simple, tall, sleek table lamps to flank your bed. This will direct light upwards and create height.

Accessorize carefully. Hanging one or two striking black and white photographs of your children on the wall is a much better idea than covering your dresser top with multiple frames. One floating shelf on the wall with three decorative sculptures is much better than a bookshelf full of knick-knacks. A mirror on the wall will open up the space and reflect light.

Create a fabulous closet. If you have a small bedroom, it pays to spend a little extra money on a closet organizing system. Doing so will eliminate the need for multiple dressers in the bedroom and allow you to put your clothing and shoes away neatly and out of sight.

Colors make room look larger

When decorating or redecorating a space that may not be as large as you like, changing the wall color can create the illusion of extra size. While it does nothing to actually make the room bigger, it at least leaves your room looking and feeling less confined. Rearranging the furniture and adding mirrors help rooms look bigger, as well. With a combination of techniques, you can give a tiny studio apartment the look of a large loft.

Neutral shades and earth tones on walls give a room a larger look. Colors like tan, beige, and dark brown reflect light rather than absorb it. When light is reflected, the room seems larger than it actually is. Painting moldings and trims a lighter color helps make the room look even bigger than making the walls alone a neutral color. In addition, using solid colors rather than special designs or wallpaper creates the illusion of a larger size within a room.

White, like neutral colors, reflects light and gives rooms a larger look. The starkness of all-white walls may be too much for some people, however. For those who enjoy dark colors, having a solid black room creates a look of a larger space, as well. Black makes the furniture and accessories within the room stand out, while the walls fade into the background.

Warm colors within a home bring the walls forward. This makes a space appear smaller than it actually is, which can work well within overly large rooms that need to be brought in. Cool colors, however, have the opposite effect; blues, greens and violets soften a room and make walls recede. Having cool jewel tones on the walls also makes space seem larger and makes the area feel warmer.

Painting all four walls a similar cool or neutral shade helps make a room look larger, but it can feel somewhat monotonous. For a way to break up the visual aesthetic, create an accent wall. An accent wall is painted a different but related shade than the other three walls in a room and can make your space look bigger. For example, having three gray walls and one white one can bring in additional light to the room and make it look bigger.

Color paint for a room

Paint provides the easiest way to transform a room, and usually one of the least expensive. By following some easy designer tips, you can totally change the feel of any space. Paint can help you warm up a cold space or enlarge an undersized room. You can give the impression of taller walls or visually bring down the height of a too-tall ceiling. And it’s an easy fix if you don’t like the results when you’re done. Be bold, be creative and make your space your own.

Assess the room you want to transform. Measure the length of the walls and the height of the ceiling. Note the number of windows and the direction they face. Draw a floor plan of your space.

Lighten a small or dark room by using soft creams and pastel colors. Choose a paint sheen in a satin or semi-gloss finish to reflect the available light.

Paint large horizontal stripes on a wall to make the room seem wider. For best results, use two shades from the same color family. Paint stripes that are at least 12 inches tall.

Choose a darker color paint for two opposite walls to add depth to a room. Stay within the same color family.

Balance a long, narrow room by painting the two short walls opposite each other in a darker color than the shade on a long walls.

Striping your walls vertically will help make lower ceilings appear taller. Make the stripes at least 8 inches wide so the room won’t appear too busy.

Bathe your ceiling in a darker hue than the walls to make a room with very high ceilings seem cozier. For extremely high ceilings, bring the darker color down the walls about a foot from the ceiling.
