Roof of home

In addition to the facade, the roof is one of the most striking elements on the outside of your house. And the roof is not only there to protect our house against inclement weather and to keep your house warm, but is also an important eye-catcher that determines the style of your house. For example, a thatched roof has a completely different appearance than roof tiles, slate or a flat roof. And with an old house, shiny glazed roof tiles can provide a wonderful extra accent. In addition, you can also embellish your roof with a beautiful dormer window in traditional style and thus increase the space in the house. If you are going to replace your roof and have a dormer window, extra insulation or green roof installed at the same time, you will save on the total costs. So definitely take this into consideration, when you plan to make changes to your roof. The roof also often offers good options for installing solar panels. This way you can make your house more energy neutral and also reduce energy costs. To get a better idea of the possibilities, we list all options in terms of types of materials and roof shapes:

Types of materials

Roof tiles

Roof tiles are still the most popular roofing material. They are made of clay, stone or concrete or glazed for a beautiful glossy look. In terms of shape, you can choose hollow or flat roof tiles. They offer good protection against all weather conditions, but can sometimes blow off the roof during a strong storm. This can be solved by securing the roof tiles on the roof. Clay roof tiles, when installed by a  professional , last on average around 100 per year and are therefore very durable. They cost between 35-65 per m2. Concrete roof tiles are a bit cheaper: 20-40 rupees, but they do not last as long: around thirty years.

Slates

We are also seeing this type of roof covering more and more and it adds a beautiful classic look to your home. You can choose natural slates or synthetic slates (made of fiber cement). They are flatter than regular roof tiles and also usually have a more square shape. The corners can be rounded or sharp. Natural slates have the appearance and color of natural stone. They therefore provide a completely different look to your home. The natural slate roof tiles are quite expensive and cost around 110 rupees per m2, but they last around 90 years. Synthetic slate roof tiles are cheaper and have a less natural appearance, but are available in all kinds of colors and styles. For a square meter you pay around 65 rupees, but the lifespan is shorter and is about thirty years.

Reed

At houses outside the city we often see thatched roofs, which of course guarantee a beautiful natural and rural appearance. In terms of costs, you have to allocate around 80 rupees per m2 for a thatched roof and this roof will remain in good condition for around 35 years.

Bitumen

Bitumen is mainly installed on flat roofs and consists of strips of roofing felt and is made from crude oil. It is inexpensive and highly resistant to all weather conditions. It is often installed on flat or slightly sloping roofs and will last about 25 years. The costs including installation are around 45 rupees per m2.

PVC

A PVC roof is made of plastic and has the same qualities and advantages as bitumen. At 50 Euros per m2, the costs are slightly higher than bitumen. An advantage of PVC is that you can choose the color yourself and PVC is also available in different colors. For example, you can opt for a white roof so that the space underneath remains cooler in the summer months. An important advantage with a flat roof.

EPDM

EPDM is made of synthetic rubber and resembles bitumen and PVC in appearance and also has the same properties as these materials. The difference is that EPDM can withstand temperature changes better because it is a very elastic material, which means that there are rarely any leakages. This, together with the long service life, make EPDM a very popular choice. On average, it lasts for about forty years and costs around 50 rupees per square meter.

Green roof

A green roof is an important trend and offers more benefits than you might think. Not only does a colorful green roof or small vegetable garden on your roof look beautiful, but your roof also lasts much longer and also offers better insulation due to this extra layer. The costs are worth it. For 55 rupees per m2 you have a completely new roof, including the roof garden and installation, and this roof will last for 60 years.

Types and shapes of roofs

Gable roof

The gable roof is one of the most common roofs in the Netherlands. They are very popular because they suit almost all architectural styles. This roof consists of two surfaces that come together in a point and form a gutter at the bottom of each of these surfaces. The slope is at least 15 degrees but you can make this roof as steep as you want. A gable roof offers good protection against all weather conditions and quickly drains excess water or snow. A disadvantage of a gable roof is that you do not always have headroom and therefore do not have full rooms under this roof.

Flat roof

A flat roofs, as the name implies, completely horizontal. However, there is always a small slope (maximum 15 degrees) to ensure good drainage. If the slope is greater than 15 degrees, we call it a pent roof. A flat roof is very simple in construction and therefore also advantageous, but also entails a number of disadvantages. For example, the roof must always be kept free of leaves so that the drainage remains in order.

When water and dirt regularly remains on the roof, this has a negative effect on the roof construction. The advantages of a flat roof are that it looks sleek and stylish and there are no risks in a strong storm. In addition to the low costs, you can install a roof terrace, solar panels or green roof or build a complete extra floor if the construction allows.

Hipped roof

A hipped roof consists of four different planes. Two elongated roof parts that come together at a point and two smaller roof parts in triangular shape on the side. With its traditional appearance, this roof gives a home a luxurious look and we often see it in country houses and farms. It can withstand strong winds and is therefore very suitable for our climate.

Mansard roof

A Mansard roof is a form of hipped roof and also consists of four different elongated parts with the top two being the smallest and meeting at the ridge of the roof. The two elongated parts below are larger and open into the gutter. This type of roof is also known as a French roof. This type of roof also gives a beautiful and luxurious classic look to a house and offers a lot of space under the roof.

Tent roof

With a tent roof, four equal triangles come together in a point, just like with a tent. The format of these roof parts can be different, which means that many different styles are possible. As with a gable roof, the space under the roof is limited here.

Insulation

An important factor for heat loss in the house is the good insulation of your roof. And so all the more reason to invest in this. Moreover, this also improves the energy label of your house, which affects the value of your house. When you are going to replace your roof, it is therefore definitely recommended to immediately optimize the insulation according to current standards.

The costs depend on the type of roof and the total surface area. The costs vary from 25 rupees per m2 for a saddle roof to 115 rupees on the outside of a flat roof. Also consider having your attic floor insulated immediately. In addition to the roof, this also has an important influence on the retention of heat in the house. Roofs – a whole world between aesthetics and functionality!

Roofs are an essential architectural component in any home. Roofs are not only an intrinsic necessity to any house, but also associated with the aesthetic side of each one. They have the ability to strongly mark the appearance of each construction and are an unavoidable part of any house, both for their presence and their absence.

Right in the idealization of the house, the question arises: – with or without a roof? Although in fact the question should be “with or without a visible roof”, because in fact many houses that appear to have no roof actually have a flat roof, with or without shingles on the roof. But this very fundamental choice cannot be based solely on personal taste, because weather conditions, especially with regard to rain, snow and temperature, are perhaps the most crucial factor and dictate which type of roof to choose.

However, after this first question, and choosing the type of roof, many other options present themselves to make the choice (even) more complicated:

– if the choice falls on a house with an apparent roof, a whole world of possibilities opens up in front of you. What type of tile to choose? With or without eaves? These are some of the questions you should answer, taking into account the look you want the house to look like. Answers are conditioned by financial issues, location, and personal taste. For example, a house with a sloping roof is ideal for a rainy area, but an eave will add to the cost.

– if the choice falls on a house without an apparent roof, the choices are no less important. You can opt for a flat roof or hidden tiles with very little slope, which provide a similar aesthetic, and then there are choices about waterproofing materials, construction methods and even the most suitable type of tiles (if it is a non-visible roof) !

How to choose the perfect roof for my house

The pros and cons of each roof depend mainly on two factors: – the climate of the region where the construction is located and your taste. In this balance will be the perfect roof for your house, without forgetting that the choice is often also conditioned by the surrounding architecture itself. In older areas, reconstruction is always subject to strict rules that in most cases require the installation of a certain roof.

If you like modern architecture or rustic architecture from the south of Portugal, and your house is not located in an urban area with restricted architecture, the most natural choice will be a flat roof. This option can be a little cheaper and still give you a nice terrace to enjoy! At Interior A to Z, in the “ Flat roofs ” section , you will find a lot of information about this type of roof, ideas and examples to help you choose, as well as a large number of  professionals specialized in building this type of roof.

If you live in a region with very rainy winters, something that is becoming scarcer in our country, or if you like houses with a more classic or rustic feel, the apparent and sloping roof is almost a must. The sloping roofs, especially Portuguese tile, are very typical of our country, especially in the northern areas and can bring advantages by removing rainwater from the interior of the house, in addition to often providing beautiful attic spaces to enjoy.

However, choosing a sloping roof is entering a world even wider than that of flat roofs: – you can opt for a gabled roof, a hipped roof, or even a modest pergola; – you can choose a support structure made of wood or cement beams; – there are numerous variations and possible combinations between the types of sloping roofs; – and the choice of tile is the final option and absolutely decisive for the style and strength of your roof. There are ceramic, clay, cement, PVC, wood slate, and a wide variety of colors that may or may not be accepted in your city or region.

To help you with this arduous task, Interior A to Z offers you many images and projects, with lots of useful information, in the various sections divided by type of sloping roof. But to make sure you make the right choices, the best thing is to ask your architect’s opinion! He will know how to tell you to what extent the weather conditions influence your choice or what restrictions may apply when building a roof in the urban area of your project.

Ideas for my flat roof

Having a flat roof with a load-bearing structure is a magnificent privilege. There is so much you can do on a flat roof…

You can make a terrace, with an outdoor living room, an awning or a pergola, or even a swimming pool! You can make your gym, your studio or just your refuge there. You can make a green roof and make your house more environmentally friendly. You can do what your imagination dictates, as long as the structure holds up! In the “Terraces” section you’ll find wonderful ideas to take advantage of your flat roof, after making sure that the structure is strong enough, something that only an architect or a civil engineer will be able to prove.

Ideas for my pitched roof

The sloping roofs do not allow much use of its surface, but create a generous interior area that can be used as another living area. These are called attics or lofts, which in some cases can be homes as, or even more, beautiful than the rest of the house. To make this use easier, our suggestion is to include generous windows, in the case of an American gable roof, or good dormer windows or skylights in the other cases of sloping roofs.

The use of a sloping roof to build a green roof, with all the insulation benefits that this produces, is possible, although it is more complicated than a flat roof. And lastly, don’t forget to decorate your roof! Yes, there are roof decorations, in the form of spikes, trim and corners, among other accessories, made with pieces of material identical to that of tiles, specifically designed with a decorative purpose, in addition to the obvious and practical.

The ceiling is the upper inner surface that defines the upper boundary of the void. It may not be a structural element, but it is the complementary surface that hides the underside of the elements above it, and the roof is an architectural element as well, its function is to define the upper part of the building and to preserve the interior areas from climatic factors.

Types of roofs in terms of construction method

Flat roof

This type of roof is called flat roof or flat roof; because it has no slopes or slopes, it is just as flat as flat Earth. Flat roofs are widely used in commercial buildings all over the world, but for residential projects, they have many competitors.

Roof truss

As for this type of roof, it is called a pyramidal or triangular roof, and it is more common in home designs, especially in countries where rain and snow often fall; this is because the constituent sides of this roof help prevent rain from accumulating on the roofs of houses. The design of this roof usually consists of two or three sides, the most common form consisting of two sides opposite at a point such as the vertex of a triangle.

Polyclinic roof

A multi-sloped roof is created based on different shapes, types and designs, but there is something common to all types of multi-sloped roofs, which is the large number of angles and sides that make up it.

Side pergola

It is a sloping roof, one side of which rests on a wall or a building, and the other end stands on a group of columns parallel to the wall, and usually the first side, i.e. the one that rests on the building/wall, is slightly higher than the other side – that is, the one that rests on the columns – so the roof appears in a sloping way from above down just like in this picture.

Types of roofs according to the material they are made of the wood

Wood is often used in the design of the roofs of country houses and cottages, and there are many types and alternatives, including cedar, redwood, southern pine and other woods. Cedar wood is the most expensive of the mentioned species. Before choosing this material to build the roof of your home, check local building codes regarding this type of roofing. The disadvantages of wooden ceilings are their constant need for maintenance, their poor ability to resist fire, and their prone to rotting and cracking over time.

Metal

Steel, aluminum, tile, copper) Metal roofs are some of the coolest roofs around, both in temperature and style for new homes. Metal surfaces are available in copper, aluminum, and stainless steel, and often have a high percentage of recycled content. They provide high solar reflective insulation, durability, and often last twice as long as wood or asphalt. Metal shingles typically mimic traditional roofing, such as wooden shakes, shingles, and shingles and tiles. Aside from its longevity, metal shingles are much lighter than most materials and are very resistant to bad weather.

Clay and concrete tiles

Terracotta tiles are very heavy, requiring additional roof framing, but are non-combustible and extremely durable. Clay roofing tiles can come in lighter colors, which adhere to cool roofing standards and can well reflect more than 50% of the sun’s solar energy. Concrete roofing tiles offer elegant, durable aesthetics to your home’s design and added value. Concrete tiles are very versatile and provide greater protection for the homeowner. These flexible tiles come in so many different shapes, shapes, textures and styles that they don’t even look like tiles at all. This material is used in roofing European homes, Mediterranean homes, as well as contemporary homes and cottages.

Asphalt

Asphalt is one of the most prevalent materials in building roofs, and evidence of this is that more than 75% of American roofs are implemented with this material because of its low cost, ease of installation, and flexibility as it can be used for any architectural style. In addition to these advantages, another important advantage is that this type of ceiling comes in a variety of colors. The most prominent disadvantages of asphalt roofs are its low value and short life span compared to many other roofing materials available today, and their bad impact on the environment because they are mainly made of petroleum products.
