What is a fee in interior design?

In interior design, a fee refers to the amount a designer charges for their professional services—planning, designing, sourcing materials, supervising execution, and sometimes even managing the entire project. This fee is separate from the cost of furniture, materials, or labour and varies widely depending on the designer’s experience, scope of work, project size, and location (like Delhi NCR, Gurgaon, or Noida).

🧾 Types of Interior Design Fees

1. Per Square Foot Fee

  • Most common pricing model in India.
  • Charged based on built-up or carpet area.

💰 Range: ₹40 – ₹500 per sq.ft.
👉 Ideal for: Complete home interiors or office projects.

2. Lump Sum/Flat Fee

  • A fixed price for the entire project regardless of size or complexity.
  • Often used for small projects or one-room makeovers.

💰 Range: ₹20,000 – ₹5 lakh+ depending on scope
👉 Ideal for: Clear, defined projects with fixed timelines.

3. Percentage of Project Cost

  • Designer charges a percentage of the total interior budget.
  • Usually includes design + project management.

💰 Range: 6% – 15% of the total budget
👉 Ideal for: Luxury homes, villas, or large residential/commercial setups.

4. Hourly Fee (Rare in India)

  • Based on the time the designer spends working or consulting.

💰 Range: ₹500 – ₹2,500 per hour
👉 Ideal for: Consultations, design reviews, or styling advice.
