An outdated kitchen lowers the value of your home and can even embarrass you in front of family and friends. Updating an old kitchen does not have to cost thousands of dollars. You can perform small updates around your kitchen to improve and change its look, or completely remodel the room when you have the money to invest in such a renovation.

If you can afford it, start with expensive updates like replacing cabinets and flooring. You want to do these before anything else, so that you do not ruin other updates. You may consider replacing only sections of cabinets, or replacing all cabinets with ones in better condition. You may also update old kitchen floors to remove outdated linoleum or simply to add value to your home and remove problem areas in the floor. Another more expensive update to consider for your kitchen involves replacing or enlarging windows to allow additional natural light to enter the space.

Update the cabinetry in your kitchen with a new paint job, new doors or new hardware. Even simple updates like this make your kitchen appear more modern. Try repainting or re-staining cabinets to repair and cover scratches, dents and other problems in the cabinet faces. Change or update cabinet doors by replacing glass, creating decorative panels or engraving the doors. To update hardware such as drawer pulls, look into current trends to give the room the most updated feel.

Change the countertops in your kitchen. Your kitchen countertops show more age than any other area of your kitchen, especially if you have dated countertop material or light countertops that show stains. You do not have to go for expensive countertops of marble and granite and you can even cover existing countertops with decorative plastic sheeting or tile.

Update the walls in your kitchen with new paint, tile and wallpaper jobs. You can cover up and remove stains on walls around your stove, sink and other areas by repainting, tiling or re-wallpapering. Tile offers a great back-splash for stoves and sinks, but the material is expensive so painting a faux tile finish onto your walls instead offers the same visual appeal for less cost.

Installing quarter round around the outside of your cabinets can be done yourself using simple tools. If you have installed a new floor and there are gaps between the floor and the cabinets, quarter round molding can be installed to cover any gaps or imperfections. Quarter round can be purchased from any home-improvement store in almost any type of wood. The molding can be nailed to the cabinets and stained or painted any color you like.

Place the quarter round molding into position on the cabinet. Fasten the quarter round to the cabinet using a nail gun and compressor. If you do not have access to a nail gun, you may use a hammer and finish nails to secure the molding in place. Apply carpenters glue to any joints in quarter round molding.

Installing a new kitchen sink drain will allow you to use a freshly installed sink, or it will fix leaks from an old sink drain. Even if you have never done any plumbing work before, installing a new sink drain does not provide too much of a challenge. A novice do-it-yourselfer should manage the installation process in less than an hour’s time. If you are unsure where to find plumber’s putty, ask for some when you purchase the new drain assembly at your plumbing supply store or home improvement center.

Flooring is an important aspect of commercial kitchen design. Floors should be durable and easy to clean. Employees should find them safe and comfortable.

Ceramic tile and painted concrete area durable choices that you can personalize for commercial kitchen floors. Both ceramic tile and concrete are easily cleaned with a mop each day, and the materials hold up to the high traffic and abuse in a busy kitchen. Slip-resistant paint additives may be applied to paint on concrete to minimize the risk of slips and falls. Some styles of ceramic tile also have a slightly grainy finish to help prevent accidents.

Lay rubber flooring to increase comfort and safety. Install safety mats over areas where cooks will be standing for long periods of time and in places where spills are likely. Rubber flooring adds another degree of safety in accident-prone areas and also reduces impact on feet and joints of workers.

Lighting can have a large effect on how your kitchen looks and feels and should not be underestimated. Incorporating the correct lighting can be difficult, however, especially for those who are not familiar with the many different effects that can be achieved with various types of lighting. Strive to incorporate as much overhead lighting as possible, which is best done in the form of either recessed or track lighting. Additionally, you can add more light to a room by placing lamps in various areas. Try adding a lamp to each corner, which can have a dramatic effect on the room's appearance.
