A design concept communicates ideas and a formulated plan for the design and decor of an interior space. Through visual presentations, an interior designer or decorator gives a client a better understanding of the room’s proposed overall feel and then provides samples of materials and a floor plan that will create that result. Use the same tools and methods to get professional-looking results and avoid costly mistakes when you are acting as your own decorator.

Professional decorators must understand the client’s needs and lifestyle before they can put together a decorating plan. The decorator establishes the intended use of the room and who will be using it. Criteria such as pets and children are important when choosing items such as upholstery, flooring and furniture styles. Socialite clients who frequently entertain colleagues have different needs from a retired couple who like to spend their free time reading or crafting. For a do-it-yourself project, determine your budget and create two separate lists -- things you need for the room and things you want. Then determine which items are going to stay or remain the same and which ones need to go or be replaced or modified.

Also known as a concept board, a mood board is a collection of images that helps convey the mood, feel or atmosphere of the proposed decorating scheme. Some designers avoid using images of furniture or room interiors because this could cause confusion or promote a false impression of the actual design scheme. It’s more of an abstract concept showing colors, patterns, forms and textures that influence the feel of the room and a generalized style, such as warm and comfortable, cool and relaxed, upscale and formal or earthy and organic.

A sample board helps bring the actual design project into focus. This display contains small samples of upholstery, fabrics, flooring, trim and paint color. It not only enables a client to get a tactile impression of the furnishings and finishes being proposed, it also provides a clear visualization of how these materials look and interact with one another. Sample boards are valuable tools in helping to spot a material or finish that might not harmonize or flow with the other choices you’ve made. At this stage of the project, changes can be made before orders for materials are placed.

Room Divider

Room dividers are especially useful in large spaces, allowing you to section off different areas. Whether you’re making a cozy nook for sleeping in a studio apartment or separating different parts of a classroom, folding room dividers provide a portable option that’s easy to move if necessary. Create your own using two sets of folding closet doors.

Paint or decorate both sets of folding closet doors before assembling into the room divider. Glue pieces of cork board to sections of the closet door to create a room divider that’s also a bulletin board, or create a mural on either side. Leave plain for an understated appearance.

Lay one set of folding doors directly next to the other set. Line them up evenly, leaving a small gap of about an inch between the two.

Line three sets of hinges up between the two sets of doors. Place the hinges at the same heights as the ones on the folding doors.

Mark the location of each screw on the hinges with a pencil. Use a drill to create one starter hole for each screw. Screw the hinges into place to attach the two folding door sets.

Stand the completed room divider in an upright position and fold the door panels in different directions to balance.

Installing pantry cabinets is similar to installing smaller cabinets. Extreme caution should be used when maneuvering large cabinets to avoid scratching the cabinet or existing walls. Pantry cabinets can be installed in kitchens, laundry rooms, bathrooms and others. You must attach the cabinet to the studs inside the wall to secure it. Most pantry cabinets will come with a detached to kick so the cabinet can be turned inside the room without hitting the ceiling.

Locate the studs inside the wall where the pantry cabinet will be installed using a stud finder. Mark the studs on the wall using a pencil.

Place the detached to kick into position on the floor. Screw the toe kick to the wall using a power drill and 2-1/2-inch grabber screws. Space the grabber screws 12 inches apart.

Use a pencil to mark a line on the wall where the edges of the cabinet will sit.

Countertop on Kitchen cabinet

Attaching a countertop to a cabinet can be accomplished in a short amount of time. Although there are different types of countertops, most of them come with a 3/4-inch plywood bottom. This allows you to install screws through the base cabinet top into the countertop. An assistant will help ensure the project goes smoothly. Countertops can be awkward to set in position without damaging walls.

Place the countertop onto the base cabinets. Countertops are cut tight, so it is important to use caution and not scratch your walls. An assistant can help position the top to ensure no walls are damaged.

Slide the drawers from the base cabinets as far as they will extend. If your drawers have removable drawer slides, press the lever and remove the drawer from the cabinet. Some drawers allow you to remove them by lowering the front of the drawer box; this will allow the roller on the slide to release from the track.

Fasten the countertop to the cabinets by drilling 1 1/4-inch grabber screws through the cabinet top into the countertop using a power drill. Place the screws roughly six inches apart. Install screws in the front and rear of the cabinet.

Fill any gaps between the countertop and the walls using a caulking gun and an appropriate caulk color. Wipe excess caulk off the countertop using a wiping cloth.
