Creating wall paneling with molding

Creating wall paneling with molding

Wall panels add a touch of class and can easily dress up a long hallway, a dining room, a bedroom or any other space that needs a different look. Experiment with the size and shape of the panels and look at different types of molding. Shapes to consider include squares and rectangles with or without ornate edges.

Placement is a very important part of this project. Consider symmetry and spacing while you carefully measure. Take a step back and try looking at your measurement from different angles before you commit to placement.

Choose your molding. Measure for placement. Mark where you will be building the panel. Double check for accuracy and use a level. If you are unsure of the placement, use painter's tape to mark out the location of the panels first.

Cut the moldings to size using the mitre box to make angled cuts that will fit together securely. Spread a layer of adhesive caulk on the back of each piece and place it on the wall. Hammer the molding strips into place. Use the latex caulk to fill in gaps between the wall and the molding and around the perimeter to give it a finished professional look.

Paint the moldings a contrasting color to the wall. White is a common color to choose, but you can use other colors to enhance the decor of your room. For instance, you could use black or brown.

Paint the inner portion of the panel you have created. You could leave it the same as the wall color and let the molding act as the main of interest or choose a color that will contrast or complement the wall color.
